I am sitting in an Airbus A321 in Zurich, Switzerland waiting for the airplane to taxi down the runway. It turns out that I'm lucky to be sitting here at all. Seems there was a situation when we arrived at the gate and the possibility of being transferred to a later flight loomed large. Sitting here now, I wonder if that might not have been a good outcome. I could be in the airport eating at a cafe that appeared to have some tasty lunch menu. Funny. It's 7:32 am. Wait. It's actually 1:30PM. So it IS lunch time
As it is, I have been sitting here for some time as the Barcelona airport decided today was a good day to fix a runway, leaving only half the runways open for arrivals and departures. There are no signs that we are heading out any time soon. It is a plane full of people speaking different languages: German, French, Spanish and Portuguese. We are heading to south to enjoy the sun and Spanish Easter celebrations.
The trip from Logan Airport to Zurich was uneventful, if long with lots of time waiting. We left home at 6P expecting to be picked up at 6:30 after a SwissAir delay announcement arrived via text. The driver did not get the message, though. So we left early and, as a result, passed through security with little effort. We entertained ourselves with wine and cheese at Vino-Volo and watched the Danish crime series Eagle on the iPad. I slept fitfully on the plane but felt better than I thought I would.
But here we are in Zurich where the flight is departing late. It helps not to think about what time it really is and to focus on right now. I suspect we will miss our ride to the hotel but surely a taxi will serve.
I wait listening to Miles Davis' Sketches of Spain. A baby is screaming. Pretty soon other babies will be screaming. And now it's a dystonic chorus.
And we are off! A little choppy and rough because of unsettled rainy weather but we are in the sky. It's less than smooth.
Next stop Barcelona.
